Jamaicans and visitors alike flock to Cornwall Beach, Walter Fletcher Beach and Doctor's Cove Beach. Many resorts have their own beaches, but there are several popular public beaches as well. That means that, after five or six hard hours of sunbathing, you'll be rewarded with spectacular sunsets. Most of the big resorts are right on the water, on the western shore. The lure of Montego Bay to most visitors is an area of sand to flop down onto while sipping a daiquiri spiced with Jamaican rum. A few brave souls rent bicycles or mopeds, but, given the free-wheeling traffic of Montego Bay, I wouldn't recommend such a course. You can rent a car, but Jamaica's left-hand drive can be bewildering to visitors, and public transportation is spotty. Otherwise, consider using taxis or, for longer trips, hiring a driver for the day. As many resorts are located in downtown Montego Bay, you'll be able to walk to the public beaches and other popular points.

Remember that transportation will be a frequent consideration. Even in the most expensive restaurants, casual wear is common. Indeed, though there are some museums and historical landmarks, the prevailing feel of MoBay - as it is popularly known - is that of a beach town. It once was a busy port, but has been a popular tourist destination for nearly a century. Montego Bay occupies the northeast corner of Jamaica. The curtain that keeps most tourists from knowing Jamaicans had been pulled away, at least a little. We started asking him a few questions, though, and soon had a spirited discussion about the taxi business, which nationality of tourists he liked/disliked the most, his two trips to America and so on. They never said a word to the driver before being dropped off. One night, we shared a taxi with four other tourists who had gone to the same restaurant. I found most Jamaicans to be approachable and helpful, and pleased - practically delighted - if you showed the slightest interest in them and their country. The food was delicious and the people lively - and, for an area so dependent upon tourism, delightfully down-to-earth. The Caribbean sun in January offered up 80-degree days that were softened at night by a soothing sea breeze. The setting is unimaginably lush, with soft, white beaches, brilliant blue water and nearby forested hills. The beauty and the voluptuousness of Montego Bay might make you feel that this is a place where you can get away from it all.
